DISCOVERY OF AMERICA AND CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS

DISCOVERY OF AMERICA

The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492 was one of the most important events of European history and shaped the political, social and economic centuries.

Christopher Columbus (location discussed, c. 1436-1456- Valladolid, Spain, May 20, 1506)

COLOMBUS HAD FOUR TRIPS

First trip (3 August 1492-15 March 1493)
The expedition left Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) on August 3, 1492, with the ships La Pinta and La Niña, and the Santa Maria ship with a crew of 90 men.

Second trip (25 September 1493-11 June 1496)

Left Cadiz and landed on the island of Puerto Rico on 19 November.
The purpose of this trip was to explore, colonize and preach the Catholic faith through the territories that had been discovered on the first trip, all under the umbrella of the Alexandrine bulls that guarded the lands discovered by the Portuguese claims.

Third trip (30 May 1498-25 November 1500)
On this voyage, Columbus sailed from Sanlúcar de Barrameda captaining six vessels and bringing Bartolome de Las Casas, who would later provide some of the transcripts of the diaries of Columbus.

Fourth trip (11 May 1502-7 November 1504)
Again left Cadiz. Explored the coasts of present Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama and the Gulf of Uraba in modern Colombia. Since the Gulf tried to return to the Spanish, but a storm did land in Jamaica, where he remained until 1504
